Difference Between Stainless Steel 304 vs Stainless Steel 316?
Stainless Steel 304 vs Stainless Steel 316 Difference in Corrosion Resistance –
Stainless steel in general offers significant corrosion resistance when compared to standard carbon steel materials. Within the stainless-steel classifications, there are grades that will beat others. The Increased nickel content in 316 SS contributes to its enhanced corrosion resistance compared to 304. As such, 316 is recommended for use in coastal regions where there is an increased salt content, or in areas where there are higher levels of pollution or corrosive chemicals, especially chloride.
Stainless Steel 304 vs Stainless Steel 316 Difference in Chemical Composition –
304 SS is considered a “common purpose” stainless steel and is characterized by the inclusion of 18% chromium (Cr) and 8% nickel (Ni) in its’ alloy composition. In contrast, 316 Stainless steel is characterized by the inclusion of 16% chromium (Cr), 10% nickel (Ni), and 2% molybdenum (Mo). The presence of molybdenum provides added strength, as further explored below.
GRADES | C | MN | SI | P | S | CR | MO | NI | N |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
SS 304 | 0.08 max | 2.0 max | 0.75 max | 0.045 | 0.030 | 18.0-20.0 | — | 8.0-10.5 | 0.10 |
SS 316 | 0.08 max | 2.0 max | 0.75 max | 0.045 | 0.030 | 16.0-18.0 | 2.0-3.0 | 10.00-14.00 | — |
Stainless Steel 304 vs Stainless Steel 316 Difference in Strength –
While both 304 and 316 stainless steels are strong, the addition of the Molybdenum in the 316 gives it a small supremacy in strength over the 304. The 316 stainless steel offers greater yield strength (where the material becomes permanently deformed) and decreased elongation and tensile strength. There is little difference between alloys when it comes to strength, but corrosion resistance is where the 316 truly surpasses the 304.
MATERIAL | TENSILE STRENGTH (PSI) | YIELD STRENGTH (PSI) | ELONGATION (% IN 50MM) MIN | HARDNESS |
---|---|---|---|---|
SS 304 | 87,000, MPA – 515 | 42,000, MPA – 205 | 58% | 82 HB |
SS 316 | 85,000, MPA – 515 | 44,000, MPA – 205 | 56% | 81 HB |
Stainless Steel 304 vs Stainless Steel 316 Difference Between Cost Analysis –
Additional difference between the 304 and 316 is the cost of the material. When made into fasteners, the 304 SS tends to be more low cost. For this reason, 304 SS products are more liked among clients. It meets standard corrosion requirements at a lower cost than the higher-grade material. On the other hand, 316 SS fasteners tend to be used by contractors who operate in highly corrosive environments.
Stainless Steel 304 vs Stainless Steel 316 Difference in Equivalent Grades –
AISI GRADE EQUIVALENT | JIS EQUIVALENT | STAINLESS STEEL NOTATION | EN/DIN NUMERICAL EQUIVALENT | UNS DESIGNATION | EN/DIN SYMBOLICAL EQUIVALENT |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
AISI 304 | SUS 304 | SS 304 | EN 1.4301 | UNS S30400 | X4CrNi18-10 |
AISI 316 | SUS 316 | SS 316 | EN 1.4401 | UNS S31600 | X5CrNiMo17-12-2 |
Most of the applications of stainless steel 304 are assign to its high concentration of Chromium which gives the alloy excellent corrosion resistance. These applications include:
- Used to make heat exchangers.
- Architectural paneling.
- Used to make saucepans, cutlery and flatware.
- In making kitchen appliances like refrigerators and dishwashers.
- Used in commercial food processing equipment and kitchen fittings like sinks and splash backs.
- Used in making brewery, food, and pharmaceutical production equipment.
- In making nuts, bolts, screws and nuts.
Generally, Stainless steel is used in applications that would corrode standard carbon steel. Generally speaking, the main component of 304 stainless steel is OCr18Ni9. This kind of stainless steel is commonly used in home life. It is normally used to make various tableware, kettle or stainless-steel pot. Basically, this material can satisfy us. The normal needs in life.
Stainless Steel 316 was Initially developed for use in paper mills. It is now regularly used in various applications which include:
- Boat fitting
- Making food, chemical and petrol production and processing equipment.
- Architectural panelling in the coastal region.
- Construction of laboratory benches and equipment.
- Medical implants.
- Kitchenware, sanitaryware and troughs.
- Mining screens.
- Tubing
Stainless 316 has better corrosion resistance than Stainless steel and often exhibits better strength at high temperatures.
