What is Glass Fiber Epoxy?
Glass fiber/epoxy laminates are used in large turbogenerators (up to 1300 MW), in particular to support the end windings. The mechanical, thermal and electrical properties depend on the choice of resin, preferably cycloaliphatic, and the use of glass mat or cloth or a mixture between them. The optimum fiber content, 74% by weight, is mainly high. The laminates can be tailored to fit the complex stress systems applied to them. Bolts, rivets and springs must all be made of insulating material and are particularly difficult to design. The manufacture of these laminates and the components is described, together with the long-term behavior and creep properties.
